Awards

A variety of awards ranging from scholarships based on academic excellence to fellowships for undergraduate research are available to students in the Division of Life Sciences, including those majoring in CBN. Some of these awards are managed by the Office of Undergraduate Instruction of the Division of Life Sciences and others by the Department of Cell Biology and Neuroscience.


The Michael Azzara Award

This scholarship is given each year to one student majoring in a Division of Life Sciences department (Biology, Cell Biology and Neuroscience, Genetics, and Molecular Biology and Biochemistry) for excellence in academic achievement, research, and community involvement.  Departmental recommendation is required.

Award: $1,000 (one award).


The Ralph DeFalco Scholarship

This scholarship is based on high academic merit and a potential for excellence in a health related field. Applications are usually available in mid-February. Intended for full-time undergraduate students in Rutgers College and Douglass College who are entering their senior year and whose major is within the Division of Life Sciences (Biological Sciences; Cell Biology & Neuroscience; Genetics; Molecular Biology & Biochemistry). Award: $1,500 (five awards depending on the availability of funds).


The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF)

This fellowship is intended for undergraduate Life Sciences majors pursuing novel, independent research under the supervision of a Life Sciences faculty member. Applications are usually available in mid-March. Awardees are expected to work in the lab full time (40 hrs/week) for a period of 10 weeks. More information.

Award: $3,500 (six or more awards depending on the availability of funds).


The Betty Falk Yatvin Award

This award is based on high academic merit. Intended for three members of the Rutgers College graduating class who have shown particular aptitude for and interest in the area of animal biology. The awardees will be notified prior to graduation.

Award: $100.


The Marjorie Frew Knox Award

This award is based on high academic merit. Intended for one member of the Douglass College graduating class who has completed the best honors project in biology. The awardee will be notified prior to graduation.

Award: $100.
