In our laboratory we study questions that involve the mammalian (including human) cardiovascular system. Specifically, we are interested in physiological mechanisms that control coronary circulation. This is important because the coronary circulation, in part, determines the balance between oxygen supply and demand in the heart. We are also interested in cardiovascular disease and its physiological prevention/pharmacological treatment. Among these diseases are myocardial ischemia and reperfusion injury, hypoxia and reoxygenation injury, and ventricular arrhythmias. Study in this laboratory will acquaint the student with handling of research animals, administration of anesthetics, surgical instrumentation of the cardiovascular system, conception and testing of experimental hypotheses, and preparation for graduate school (e.g. physiology, pharmacology) and/or medical/veterinary medical school (e.g. cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery).
